back. what i expect for today and we will have more in just a moment. pg&e is working to restore power to hundreds in the south bay. it is in sunnyvale. we are live there with the dramatic car crash that caused it. christian? >> reporter: dramatic car crash and scene. you can see the top of the power pole down, in someone's backyard. if you look to the left, pg&e is on scene here. not a lot of work to try to repair the line and get it off the ground. they have to bring in a utility pole repair truck. initially, this pole down affected 1600 numbers. we are here it is down to 250 customers in the immediate area. it started after three this morning when a minivan crashed into a utility pole. it came down dragging cable. and telephone lines. the driver was able to walk

away from the accident. it as potentially dangerous scene with live wires draped down on the road. a neighbor tells us what he saw when he looked outside. >> i was in bed. it was like a quarter after three in the morning. we were woken by several explosions which was the transformers going off. >> now, the police did speak with the driver and did not initially suspect that the driver was impaired. no word on if the driver will be cited for this accident. coming back out to the live shot, can you see this is one of the homes that is without power. 250 homes in the immediate vicinity affected without power. they could have power restored in a matter of hours. the bigger repair job is going to be getting that debris cleared out. it is obviously a hazard for people who drive in the area and getting a replacement pole in there as soon as possible.

we will tell you more. and right now we are live in sunnyvale, ktvu, channel 2 news. they are investigating a fatal shooting near the square. it happened yesterday afternoon near third and franklin streets. they found the man lying in the street. he died a short time later. officers say several people were in the area at the time and may have witnessed the shooting. >> well, we were parking and we heard some, it sounded like a firecracker going off. i was saying, whoa, i was thinking the noise we heard could have been gunshots. >> police say they have not made any arrests, it is the third shooting in oakland in a 24 hour peer. zack san jose police stay a boy was stabbed during the christmas celebration. the event was in full swing. the teenager was stabbed in the chest and arm and his injuries are not life-threatening.

they think three people ran from the scene and police are still searching for them. new, this morning, at the stroke of midnight same sex couples started lining up for licenses when washington's law allowing gay marriage went into effect. they require a three day waiting period. so today is the first day couples can marry. 140 same sex couples are going to marry later on today. the new gay marriage law comes as the supreme court announces it will review same-sex marriage including proposition 8. it will look at a challenge that denies them the benefits that the heterosexual couples receive. the supreme court reviewed to look at the challenge which bans gay marriage in california. they will hear argumentses in march and with rulings expected

by june. a group is urging the photograph to ban the salvation army. they made the request after a student acted and said the homeless shelter and soup kitchens refused to offer same sex couples. and a woman was teed access to a women's shelter. the campus at san bernardino said they not and killed a student. few tails have been released. they were forced to fire their weapons after a graduate students became violent. he was treated for life-threatening injuries. a man was shot in a standoff with the s.w.a.t. team. that standoff started yesterday afternoon when police responded

to a report of an armed robbery at the fast food restaurant and follow some boulevard. they discover -- folsom boulevard. they discovered there were two hostages. >> they were forced to take action to end this safely. >> neither of the employees were hurt. the suspect was taken to the hospital where he died of his injuries,. new this morning, a motorcyclist is in critical condition after being hit in oakland. that happened at 10 in the evening at high avenue. they are looking for the driver who left the seen of the accident. anyone with information on the accident is asked to call oakland police. a cyclist was killed in alameda county. the chp said the rider hit a rock. but authorities weren't able to give us any more details. they may run into traffic today because of the holy procession.

catholics will honor the virgin of guadalupe who is said to appear before a peasant. that procession is scheduled to begin at noon on detroit avenue and continue on to whittman and oak grove road and end at st. francis of assissi church. some streets will be closed during the event. if you like the mornings crisp and cold. you will like it this morning, right, rosemary? >> not asy. livermore is 12 degrees warmer than we were 24 hours ago. subtle changes. the fog not as thick. not as widespread and the cold, well, not as bad. giving you a look to the beautiful shot from our ktvu cam. and we have high clouds streaming over head. the clouds are helping to, well, off set the cold we felt overnight. you can see those here on the sale light view as i show you the ridge of high pressure.

it is bringing us breezy conditions and it is beginning to materialize. chances are you are not feeling them outdoors but we are expecting the hills to reach a 30 miles an hour gust. gusting faster than that at this hour. the winds are going to help us bring the warmer weather. mid- to upper 60s for the afternoon. you can see anywhere from 10 to 15 miles an hour. some of the hills over the north bay and east bay. look at this. they are on the way. and they will be with us on monday. bringing in drier weather and on monday, areas dealing with light wind. this is what you may be seeing. calm to light wind outside your doors. temperatures in the north bay. 36 in napa valley. and santa rosa. and 5 degrees what we felt 24 hours ago. a little bitter there.

widespread 40s and livermore. 51 degrees. we are off to a better start this morning. we are soaring above yesterday's highs. 67 for santa rosa. and these numbers four to 8 degrees above the seasonal average. 65 expected in oakland. and low 60s in san francisco and out to candlestick to watch the 49ers play, it is a mild one. mid 60s for hayward and down to 66 in san jose. and 67 in morgan hill. how about santa cruz mostly sunny skies and 66 expected in your afternoon. the extended forecast here, we will hold onto the above normal temps through monday. and then we start to see the changes move our way. partly sunny skies. you will feel the transition by the second half of the afternoon. we wake up wednesday afternoon with scattered showers and look at the afternoon high. they take a plunge.

about now and a blanket of high clouds overhead hoping to over set the cooling in the night hours. police in pennsylvania say a man was trying to sell a gun when it accidentally discharged killing his 7-year-old son. it happened outside a gun store outside of pittsburgh. he was trying to get into the truck when the gun went off. he did not realize a bullet was in the chamber. the shooting is being investigated as an accident. the father could still face manslaughter charges. prince william made an appearance after his wife was treated for morning sickness in a hospitals. he was in london and not accompanied by middleton and did not comment on the death of a nurse who took her own life after a radio station hoax. they did not confirm her cause of death. but they say she may have been overwhelmed by stress. and they duped her into

believing the queen of england was calling. her family is speaking out about the tragedy. >> she was a good natured sister-in-law. she was so good and beautiful and she and her husband were great together. >> radio executives called the suicide an unforeseeable tragedy and said the station did nothing illegal. in another development, they have contacted australian authorities about a possible investigation into the case. former south african president nelson mandela is in the hospital. but the current president said he is doing well. the 94-year-old is under going medical tests. the present president visited him and said there is no cause for him. he fought apartheid in south africa before becoming the first black president. he is heading back to cuba.

chavez announced his cancer had rushed after two previous operations and chemotherapy treatment. chavez said if his health gets worse, his successor will be nicholas maduro, it is the first time he spoke about the possibility of a successor. >> an american doctor abducted from the taliban has been rescued. >> dr. dilip joseph was rescued this morning. joseph was captured by insurgent outside the afghan capital. it showed that joseph was in imminent danger, a fallen coast guard officer was laid to rest in southern california in a somber ceremony. senior chief petty officer terrell horn was killed earlier in the month during a

growing backlash against the new logo for the university of california system. more than 25,000 people have signed an on line petition at change.org to review the new design which made its debut friday. some say it is undignified. the new design is not replacing the traditional logo and will be used in traditional to the university seal. they won an emotional victory over western oregon as a player who almost died from cardiac arrest watched from the bench. doctors say danny berger was clinically dead for several seconds when he collapsed during an utah practice. a player was able to revive him using cpr and a defibrillator. >> when you are in bed and you stand up too quick. it felt like that. and kind of went black and the next thing i knew, i woke up in the hospital. doctors say berger has a

heart condition and never had any symptoms before his collapse. he hopes to play again and it could be several weeks before he is well enough to take to the court. the pac 12 network is facing a strike. they launched back in august but an union representing freelance technical employees picketed at a game in los angeles. they wanted to establish standard wages and benefits for freelancers working live sporting events. they had fewer cameras because of the walkout. the pac 12 network said it is focused on an unclues sieve environment. looking to grab a big win today. it gets tougher with tom brady and the new england patriots on the schedule for next sun apsunday night. they will keep an eye on collin kaepernak and they will take them on at 1:05 and if mario can't place because after bad

officials are looking into whether a meteor touched down but the weather service now said the fire ball may have been debris from cosmos as it entered the atmosphere. it collided in 2009 as it orbited over siberia. some ended a dispute over who should be removing a whale. the smelly 40,000-pound whale has been rotting object on the -- on the beach. the homeowners association hired someone to bring it from the shore. it does not appear to have a significant impact on the sierra just yet. san francisco chronicle reports the mountainous regions of california including lake tahoe are the only places in the country where temperatures

we have things working in our favor. it will continue to develop through the morning hours but the wind helps to steer out the cold air and helps to prevent the fog. in addition to that, high clouds acting as a blanket for us this morning and helping to hinder the fog. the patchy fog out there. not as widespread. no dense fog at the moment. temperatures are slipping back into the 30s. mid- to upper 40s around the bay area. and we won't feel it so much. it will continue to be breezy through tomorrow for the higher elevations. low to mid- to upper 50s and feeling good. then at lunchtime upper 50s. low 60s with mostly sunny skies in the forecast. i will fast forward us into the morning. this is a return of weight weather and this is in time for the morning commute. we are drying out and said thursday morning. continuing with the possibility of maybe a few scattered

look at the scope of the damage. look over to the right. the emergency crews, or the crews that are working right now to get the utilities and everything repaired. that is comcast crew trying to get cable restored in the area. the number now is down to 230 customers affected in the immediate area. it was made a couple of minutes ago and happened shortly after three this morning when a minivan crashed into the pole t dragged downpour, and cable and telephone lines. the driver was able to walk away from the accident. a potentially deadly or dangerous scene with live wires draped down across the road. we are hearing the police did speak with the driver and did not initially suspect that the driver was impaired. no word if the driver will be cited for the accident. one neighbor who lives closest to the stent scene tells us this morning, he is withoutibilitier net and cable

and -- without internet. and cable and phones. he said the utility poles that were struck is at a critical juncture for the neighborhood. >> there are underground cables. this is a junction pole for going underground and going to over head. so, there is a lot of stuff that was literally impacted. >> reporter: now, we are trying to get in contact with pg&e and when all the power might be restored. you can see this is quite the talk of the neighborhood. we see a lot of neighbors coming out to take a look at this. and they are looking for answers from pg&e and obviously a whole lot of work to do. and the pole is still down. they are going to have to replace the pole. we have not seep the replacement truck. fortunately, the lines have been deenergized so the scene is not dangerous. no word on when power will be restored to all the people in

chiefs player killed his girlfriend and then himself. two funeral services being held for two teenagers. and shot and killed in oakland. a sidewalk memorial marks the spot where the two were gunned down two weeks ago. family and friends gathered at colonial chapel to remember them. today's services will be held for one of them at the mortuary. the bodies were found near brookdale park. the man who killed lamar will be sentenced. he was trying to kidnap three women back in 2009. those incidents happened when garcia-torres was 17 years old. several years before sierra la mar went missing. she is responsible for the

children she was supposed to protect. there was an agencier back in 2,004 despite the state saying she abused her foster children. they report this past january, one of her former foster children told the county she was unfit. she was fired in july. cps cited the state investigation which accused her and her husband of locking children in a garage without food or water and charged with driving a car for her own private use. she has denied the abuse charges. they arrested a man for killing someone in a road rage incident. the victim was on the phone with 911 dispatchers when he was shot. a driver called 911 early yesterday morning to report two women in a car had pointed a gun at him. the driver followed the women telling dispatchers he needed to get a description for the police of the two women. >> well the woman became alarmed and called a family

member. soon after, multiple shots were fired. >> i was laying down half asleep. i heard three shots. pau, pau, pau. >> i heard a -- paw, pow, -- pow. >> and now they are facing homicide charges. they are lacking for a woman who attacked another woman and stole her vehicle at gunpoint. they approached the victim on san pablo avenue. the car broke down while heading o her mother's home. later, police say, she took out a gun and beat up the victim and took the car. the suspect is described as latina, five neat one and she calls herself jessica. possible chemical leak at a grocery store in concord is being investigated. 20 people were evacuated from the food max yesterday afternoon. people described the odor as a strong chemical scent. possibly play a solvent or

marijuana cultivation. the concord city council will discuss a possible ban at a meeting on tuesday. san francisco restaurant is getting a lot of attention for blaming its closure on yelp reviews. jake on market shut its doors last week. they posted a farewell note on the website and on the door. in the note, the owner thanks supporters and criticized people who posted negative letters on yelp, some people responded by posting new messages defending their reviews. >> it shows the power of on line media and what is changing. how you don't again have to go to a place to see if it is good or not. >> the owners never is thought the farewell note would get so much attention. if you love dungeness crabs, you may want to head down there today. this may be your best chance to sample the delicacy.

than yesterday. there are concerns that a typhoon could make a second landing today. it hit the southern part of the country tuesday leaving hundreds of others missing and killing 600. it is changing its course and headed towards the northwest. people who live in the mountainous regions are being warned of heavily mudslides. they killed a senior pakistan officials. and his daughter was also wounded. u.s. officials say drone attacks near the afghan border have diminished al-qaida's power. egypt's president has thrown out a decree that gave him expanded powers and sparked violent protests. last months, it gave the president the power to make laws and decisions that were not subject to judicial reviews. president mohamed morsi said it
